Future tense in Polish language

The future tense in Polish depends on the aspect of the verb, which we covered in the lesson on verb aspect and the past tense. Imperfective verbs build the future with będę; perfective verbs simply use their present-tense endings. Once you see the logic, the Polish future is easier than the English one.

Future of imperfective verbs

Take będę, będziesz, będzie… (the future of być from lesson 2) and add the verb. There are two equally correct ways to add it:

Option 1: będę + infinitive – the easy one:

Będę czytać – I will be reading

Option 2: będę + past form (the -ł/-ła form, matching your gender):

Będę czytał (a man) / Będę czytała (a woman) – I will be reading

Both mean exactly the same. Poles use both. If you don’t want to think about gender, option 1 is always safe.

Ja będę czytać / czytał / czytała	I will read, will be reading
Ty będziesz czytać / czytał / czytała	You will read
On będzie czytać / czytał, ona będzie czytać / czytała	He / she will read
My będziemy czytać / czytali / czytały	We will read
Wy będziecie czytać / czytali / czytały	You will read (plural)
Oni będą czytali / one będą czytały (or czytać)	They will read

Future of perfective verbs

Here is the trick that surprises learners: a perfective verb conjugated like the present tense means the future. Perfective verbs have no present (you can’t be inside a completed action), so those forms are free to mean “will do”.

The verb przeczytać (to read to the end):

Ja przeczytam	I will read (and finish)
Ty przeczytasz	You will read
On, ona przeczyta	He, she will read
My przeczytamy	We will read
Wy przeczytacie	You will read (plural)
Oni, one przeczytają	They will read

So kupię means “I will buy”, zrobię “I will do”, napiszę “I will write”. No auxiliary verb needed.

Which future should you use?

The same logic as in the past tense. Process, duration or repetition: imperfective with będę. One completed action with a result: perfective.

Jutro będę pisać raport – Tomorrow I will be writing the report (that’s my day)

Jutro napiszę raport – Tomorrow I will write the report (it will be done)

Będziemy często do was dzwonić – We will call you often (repeated)

Zadzwonię wieczorem – I’ll call in the evening (once)

Będziemy czekać przed kinem – We will be waiting in front of the cinema

Za rok będę mówić po polsku – In a year I will speak Polish
