In this lesson we will learn to talk about the future: what you will do tomorrow, next summer, in ten years. A secret first: Italians often don’t bother. For plans that are already decided, the present tense works fine, just like in English “the train leaves at eight”. But the real future tense is used all the time too, so let’s learn it.
How to build the future
Take the infinitive, drop the final -E, and add the endings: -ò, -ai, -à, -emo, -ete, -anno. One extra step for -ARE verbs: their A changes to E (parlare gives parler-, not parlar-).

Mind the accents on io and lui/lei forms: parlerò, parlerà. They carry the stress.
Irregular stems
The endings never change, but some verbs shorten their stem. Learn these stems once, and you will meet them again in the conditional mood lesson, because the conditional uses exactly the same stems:

Also, verbs in -CARE and -GARE add an H to keep the hard sound (cercare – cercherò, pagare – pagherò), and verbs in -CIARE and -GIARE drop the I (cominciare – comincerò, mangiare – mangerò).
One more use: guessing
Italians use the future tense to make guesses about the present. It’s very common in speech:
Che ore sono? Saranno le cinque – What time is it? It must be around five
Dov’è Marco? Sarà a casa – Where is Marco? He’s probably at home
Quanti anni ha? Avrà quarant’anni – How old is he? He must be about forty

L’anno prossimo andremo in Italia – Next year we will go to Italy
Quando avrò tempo, leggerò questo libro – When I have (will have) time, I’ll read this book
Arriveranno stasera alle nove – They will arrive tonight at nine
Che cosa farai dopo l’università? – What will you do after university?
Non potrò venire alla festa – I won’t be able to come to the party
Un giorno saprai la verità – One day you will know the truth
Se studierai, imparerai – If you study, you will learn
