Time to build bigger sentences. Complex sentences in Polish hang on a few connector words: że (that), żeby (so that, in order to), który (which, who), plus bo, ale, więc and friends. With these you stop speaking in single bricks and start building houses.
ŻE: saying that…
Że introduces reported thoughts and statements, like English “that”, except Polish never drops it, and it always takes a comma before it:
Myślę, że masz rację – I think (that) you are right
Wiem, że nie masz czasu – I know you don’t have time
Powiedziała, że przyjdzie jutro – She said she would come tomorrow
Notice the last example: Polish keeps the original tense. She said “przyjdę” (I will come), so the reported version stays future: powiedziała, że przyjdzie. No backshifting like English “said she would”.
ŻEBY: wanting and purpose
Żeby covers two big jobs. First, purpose (in order to):
Uczę się polskiego, żeby rozmawiać z rodziną – I’m learning Polish (in order) to talk with my family
When both halves have the same subject, żeby takes the infinitive, as above. Second, wanting someone else to do something:
Chcę, żebyś przyszedł – I want you to come
Poprosiła, żebym zadzwonił – She asked me to call
Here żeby takes the personal endings you know from the conditional (żebym, żebyś, żeby, żebyśmy, żebyście) and the verb goes into the past form. This is exactly the gdyby mechanics from the conditional lesson, applied to wishes.
KTÓRY: the Polish “which / who”
Który attaches a description to a noun, and it declines like an adjective, agreeing in gender with the noun it describes and taking the case its own clause demands:
To jest książka, którą czytam – This is the book (that) I’m reading
Mam kolegę, który mieszka w Gdańsku – I have a friend who lives in Gdansk
Film, o którym mówiłem, jest w kinie – The movie I told you about is in the cinema
Ludzie, których znam, nie palą – The people I know don’t smoke
The rule of thumb: find the noun (its gender), then ask what role który plays in its own clause (its case). Książka is feminine; I read WHAT? Accusative: którą.
The everyday connectors
bo – because (casual): Nie idę, bo pada – I’m not going because it’s raining
dlatego że / ponieważ – because (more formal)
ale – but: Chcę, ale nie mogę – I want to, but I can’t
więc – so: Było późno, więc poszliśmy do domu – It was late, so we went home
kiedy / gdy – when: Kiedy byłem mały, mieszkaliśmy na wsi – When I was little, we lived in the country
jeśli – if: Jeśli chcesz, pomogę ci – If you want, I’ll help you
czy – whether: Nie wiem, czy on przyjdzie – I don’t know whether he’ll come. Yes, the same czy that asks questions.
Polish punctuation note: subordinate clauses are always cut off with a comma, even short ones. Wiem, że wiesz.
