Conditional mood in Polish language

The conditional mood in Polish is how you say “I would do it”: dreams, polite requests and what-if sentences. The construction is beautifully simple once you know the past tense, because the conditional is just the past tense plus the particle BY.

How to form the conditional

Take the past tense form (czytał, czytała, czytali…) and attach BY with the personal ending:

-bym (ja), -byś (ty), -by (on, ona, ono), -byśmy (my), -byście (wy), -by (oni, one)

The verb otwierać (to open):

Ja otwierałbym / otwierałabym	I would open (m / f)
Ty otwierałbyś / otwierałabyś	You would open
On otwierałby, ona otwierałaby	He / she would open
My otwieralibyśmy / otwierałybyśmy	We would open
Wy otwieralibyście / otwierałybyście	You would open (plural)
Oni otwieraliby / one otwierałyby	They would open

Gender works exactly as in the past tense: -ł- for men, -ła- for women, -li- for groups with men, -ły- for the rest.

The most useful conditional: chciałbym

If you learn one conditional form, make it this one. Chciałbym / chciałabym (I would like) is the polite way to ask for anything in Poland:

Chciałbym kawę – I would like a coffee (a man speaking)

Chciałabym zarezerwować stolik – I would like to book a table (a woman)

Chcielibyśmy zapłacić – We would like to pay

Its cousin from the modal verbs lesson: Czy mógłbyś mi pomóc? – Could you help me? Czy mogłaby Pani powtórzyć? – Could you repeat that? (formal, to a woman)

“If” sentences: gdyby and jeśli

For real conditions (if X happens, Y will happen), use jeśli with normal tenses:

Jeśli będzie padać, zostaniemy w domu – If it rains, we’ll stay home

For hypothetical ones (if I were rich…), use gdyby. Gdyby absorbs the by, so the personal endings attach to it, and the verb stays in the plain past form:

Gdybym miał pieniądze, kupiłbym dom – If I had money, I would buy a house

Gdyby ona tu była, wiedziałaby, co robić – If she were here, she would know what to do

Gdybyśmy mieli czas, pojechalibyśmy nad morze – If we had time, we would go to the seaside

Note the pattern: gdyby- takes the ending in the “if” half, and the main half keeps its own -by on the verb.

The same absorption happens with żeby (so that, in order to), which you’ll meet properly in the lesson on complex sentences: Mówię wolno, żebyś rozumiał – I speak slowly so that you understand.

Co byś zrobił na moim miejscu? – What would you do in my place?

Chciałabym mieszkać nad morzem – I would like to live by the sea (a woman)

Mógłbyś zamknąć okno? – Could you close the window?

Gdybym wiedział, powiedziałbym ci – If I knew, I would tell you

Ona nigdy by tego nie zrobiła – She would never do that

Byłoby świetnie! – That would be great!

Na twoim miejscu poszedłbym do lekarza – In your place, I would go to the doctor
