In the lesson on verbs of motion you learned iść / chodzić and jechać / jeździć. Polish multiplies these few verbs into dozens by adding prefixes: wejść (to enter), wyjść (to exit), przyjść (to arrive), odejść (to leave). Learn the prefixes once and you unlock the same meanings on every motion verb, and on many other verbs too.
The core prefixes
PRZY- arrival: przyjść (to come, on foot), przyjechać (to arrive, by transport)
W- / WE- in: wejść (to enter), wjechać (to drive in)
WY- out: wyjść (to go out, to exit), wyjechać (to leave town, to go abroad)
OD- / ODE- away from: odejść (to walk away, to leave), odjechać (to depart, of trains and buses)
DO- reaching: dojść (to reach, on foot), dojechać (to get to)
POD- / PODE- approaching: podejść (to come up to), podjechać (to pull up)
PRZE- across: przejść (to cross), przejechać (to drive through)
PO- setting off: pójść, pojechać (to go, the perfective pair you already know)
The aspect pattern
Prefixed motion verbs come in pairs like all Polish verbs. The perfective is built on iść / jechać, and the imperfective on -chodzić / -jeżdżać:
przyjść (perf.) / przychodzić (imperf.) – to come
wyjść / wychodzić – to go out
wejść / wchodzić – to enter
odejść / odchodzić – to leave
przyjechać / przyjeżdżać – to arrive by transport
wyjechać / wyjeżdżać – to leave town
So: Zwykle przychodzę o ósmej (I usually come at eight, habit, imperfective) but Wczoraj przyszedłem o dziewiątej (yesterday I came at nine, one event, perfective).
The past of the -jść verbs follows the irregular szedł / szła pattern you know from iść: przyszedłem / przyszłam, wyszedł / wyszła, weszliśmy.
Each prefix brings its preposition
Prefixed motion verbs usually pair with a matching preposition:
wejść do pokoju – to enter the room
wyjść z domu – to leave the house
przyjechać do Warszawy – to arrive in Warsaw
dojść do dworca – to reach the station
podejść do okna – to walk up to the window
przejść przez ulicę – to cross the street
odejść od stołu – to leave the table
The same prefixes work beyond motion
This is why the system is worth learning. The prefixes carry their meaning onto ordinary verbs: pisać (to write) gives podpisać (to sign, “write under”), przepisać (to rewrite / copy), dopisać (to add in writing). Płacić (to pay) gives przepłacić (to overpay). You’ll start guessing the meaning of new verbs correctly, which feels like a superpower.

Pociąg odjeżdża za pięć minut! – The train departs in five minutes!
Wyszedłem z domu o siódmej – I left the house at seven

Jak dojść do rynku? – How do I get to the market square? (on foot)
Przyjeżdżają do nas w sobotę – They are coming to us on Saturday
Przeszliśmy przez most – We crossed the bridge
